Horizon 2044: Widebody Momentum in Latin America

The Latin American aviation sector is on the verge of a major transformation. Driven by an urban population surge of 80 million by 2044, passenger traffic is projected to grow by 3.7% annually. The long-haul market will play a pivotal role in this expansion with intercontinental activity expected to grow slightly more than 3% annually. To remain competitive, Latin American carriers will require a tailored fleet strategy.

With only 36% of the current regional fleet consisting of new generation aircraft, the imperative for modernization is clear. Airbus forecasts a requirement for 230 new widebody aircraft by 2044. This demand is twofold: replacing 120 aging aircraft and adding 110 units to facilitate market expansion.

The A330neo and A350 Families have emerged as the premier platforms for this transition setting the benchmark on major international flows with their outstanding AIRSPACE winning cabin award. Since their debut, these new-generation widebodies have undergone continuous enhancement, offering operators up to 14 tons of additional payload and greater flexibility with up to 1200 nm additional range. In addition, both families deliver today a 25% reduction in fuel consumption and CO2 emissions compared to previous generations and keep improving.

By 2028, the A330neo will feature further optimizations—including a 6-tonne MTOW increase—and will be certified for high altitude operations. With the upcoming A350-1000 Ultra Long Range (ULR), capable of flying up to 9,800 nm (18,150 km), and the A350 Freighter, the A350 continues to raise the bar for long-haul travel and is set to transform global logistics in the region.

Besides Airbus’ commitment to increasing value and performance, sustainability remains a key strategic pillar and that’s why by the end of the decade, all Airbus aircraft will be 100% Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) compatible.
