Far More Than Just Internet Access for Passengers

The connected aircraft is no longer a futuristic concept, it has become a commercial necessity. As traveler expectations shift from "disconnected escape" to "always-on productivity," Airbus is redefining the inflight experience with High Bandwidth Connectivity Plus (HBCplus), a solution designed to transform aircraft into fully integrated digital assets.

As traveler expectations evolve rapidly, Airbus is redefining the inflight experience with its HBCplus solution. The goal? To transform the aircraft into a fully integrated digital asset.

HBCplus - The Power of Choice: Agnostic and Flexible Connectivity

The satellite connectivity landscape is changing fast, with new constellations in Low Earth Orbit (LEO), Medium Earth Orbit (MEO), and Geostationary Orbit (GEO) competing for bandwidth. Airbus HBCplus breaks the traditional "lock-in" by preserving an Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) certified airframe integration designed to be futureproof and leave choices to choose and change service providers. This agnostic approach allows airlines to switch Service Providers (MSPs) without having to replace the antenna installed on the fuselage. Partnerships are already in place with major players such as SES and Hughes for our current Ka-band solution. This ecosystem for this solution will further develop to extend MEO and GEO offer towards service provider options in LEO orbit.

Passengers, particularly Generation Z, are driving the urgency of this transformation. They will comprise the majority of travelers by the beginning of the next decade.

For these digital natives, high-speed, low-latency Wi-Fi isn’t a luxury; it’s a given. Airbus is helping airlines meet this demand by treating the cabin as an extension of the passengers’ home or office, ensuring social media, streaming and access to companies' clouds are seamless even at 35,000 feet.

As airlines strive to meet these soaring expectations, they are discovering that connectivity is no longer just a cost center, but a powerful engine for ancillary revenue. By 2035, onboard e-commerce, targeted advertising, and destination services could sum-up to a significant double digit  total airline revenue opportunity. To capitalize on this opportunity, Airbus is deploying tools like the using onboard artificial intelligence to provide personalized recommendations in real time.

Connected ecosystem of services

With HBCplus, the connected aircraft goes beyond WiFi and connecting passengers to the internet. It optimizes what happens behind the scenes and provides access to a platform ecosystem of services that can be operated on an open digital platform. This allows airlines to test and deploy at their own pace. The aircraft is no longer a blind spot, but rather a fully integrated digital asset. For example, there is a constant flow of data between the aircraft and the ground for maintenance and operations, which increases operational efficiency.

For Airbus, the future of aviation lies in the ability to transform every flight into a seamless and profitable digital experience. By offering scalable and flexible architecture solutions that preserve structural integrity, HBCplus prepares fleets and limits hardware impacts to easily adapt to new technological and commercial challenges of tomorrow.
