Avianca order makes history

For more than 30 years, my team and I have been part of many deals that have propelled aviation throughout Latin America. We’ve seen Airbus market share in the region nearly triple in the past 20 years, and we’ve been proud to bring to the region the newest and most modern aircraft. But the recent order from Avianca for 100 A320neo aircraft will forever stand out as a historic aviation milestone.
Avianca’s decision to add 100 new A320neo to a fleet of nearly 180 A320 Family aircraft in service and in backlog will allow the airline to truly maximize their return on past investments. For more than 15 years, Avianca has benefitted from the excellent operating economics and award-winning reliability of the A320 Family.
The airline group, which now boasts a network of over 100 destinations, will operate the new A320neo from their hubs in Bogota, Lima and San Salvador.
It is clear that fuel efficiency and passenger comfort are critical parts of Avianca’s fleet modernization strategy, but I also know that the airline is particularly looking forward to the A321neo’s superior seat capacity and range advantage.
Airbus is proud that the A320neo has followed in the footsteps of the A320ceo, becoming the undisputed aircraft of choice for Latin America with 345 firm orders from six customers (Avianca, Azul, Interjet, LATAM, VivaAerobus and Volaris). Not only do we have two-thirds of the market in terms of units sold, compared to the competition, but the NEO is the clear customer choice with nearly 70 percent of orders in the new generation single aisle aircraft market.
