Volaris receives 7000th A320 Family aircraft

A major milestone in fleet growth

In April, Volaris took delivery of their 60th A320 Family aircraft in Toulouse. But, this particular A320 was not just a major milestone aircraft for the airline but also for Airbus’ most popular aircraft Family, as it happened to be the 7000th A320 Family aircraft delivered by Airbus.

Volaris’ ultra-low-cost model serving Mexico, the United States, and Central America, is yielding excellent financial results and continued passenger growth. In 2015, Volaris transported 12 million passengers, an increase of 22 percent since 2014, and judging by their first quarter results this is a trend that is bound to continue in 2016. Their low fares and bus switching campaign, in which they have encouraged bus passengers to fly, has continued to be the cornerstone of their unbundled business model. This has stimulated demand for both domestic and international travel in Mexico and the United States.

The airline’s fleet selection has also been a key to their success. Volaris has been operating exclusively Airbus aircraft from the start, and their fleet makeup has evolved over the years. Whereas Volaris started operations with a high proportion of A319s, they soon transitioned to A320s, and now Volaris is betting big on their A321s as a revenue generator on their trunk routes. The A321 provides Volaris 28 percent higher capacity than their A320s, allowing them to offer a greater number of seats while lowering their unit costs. This aircraft also provides a great solution to Mexico City’s congested, slot-limited airport.

This year Volaris will receive their first A320neo, the latest and most efficient member of the Family, of which they have ordered 30. The latest engine and airframe technology of the A320neo combined will provide the airline over 15 percent fuel savings compared to a current A320… and without a doubt, much continued success.

To many more years of Airbus and Volaris milestones!
