Airline scientists at Airbus help airlines, airports improve operational efficiency

The Covid-19 pandemic has had a big impact on all sectors, with commercial aviation being one of the most affected in the world. Travel restrictions, combined with the inherent high costs have made the industry more vulnerable than others. Projections from the International Air Transport Association (IATA) find that full traffic recovery to pre-COVID levels will not happen until 2023.

In this context, advanced research centers across the world are actively helping the aviation sector devise ways to mitigate the impact of the global pandemic. The Airbus Airline Sciences department aims to provide airlines and partners with a holistic view that enables them to test out different recovery scenarios in realistic daily operations by using algorithms derived from such research.

Bringing together the experience of former airline employees and aircraft manufacturers, the team uses simulation based on real-life data for airlines to compare flight options and increase overall efficiency, thanks to factors such as improved tracks, optimized load factors, adapted fuel policies, optimized speeds and aircraft vertical profiles.

Airline Sciences research objectives include:

1. Suggesting the right aircraft for the right route
2. Maximizing profitability
3. Exploring new and volatile markets, regulatory changes and/or earnings

This valuable research accurately captures the business needs of airlines and ensures the integration of Airbus tools in Airbus aircraft, improving their route and revenue efficiency as well as airport optimization. This, added to the unusual and uncertain context of today's global aviation, has become critical for the aviation sector, and Airbus remains committed to support its customers in their recovery
