Celebrating 10 years with Interjet

Uncompromised low cost with the A320

December 5 will mark the 10-year anniversary since the launch of the Mexican low cost carrier (LCC) Interjet.

The key to Interjet’s success as an airline has been their distinct focus on improving the passenger travel experience. With a 34” seat pitch in economy class and the Airbus standard 18” seat width, Interjet offers an unparalleled level of comfort to its passengers which is emblematic of their brand. Passengers also benefit from perks like complimentary in-flight snacks and beverages, a frequent-flyer program and a baggage allowance of 50kg on all its flights.

Interjet started operations in 2005 with three A320, but only a year later the airline placed an order for 10 new A320ceos plus options for an additional 10, which were subsequently converted into firm orders. Interjet first established its base and state-of-the-art maintenance facility in Toluca International Airport, but 2008 marked the start of some of its operations to Mexico City International Airport in order to take advantage of traffic out of this future mega-city. In 2012 Interjet ordered 40 latest-technology, eco-efficient A320neo aircraft; since then, Interjet’s A320 fleet has grown to nearly 40 aircraft, which constantly perform with 99.8 percent operational reliability.

Interjet has grown to be a market leader in Mexico, with a market share that has grown steadily to more than 20 percent. Not only do they have a strong presence in the Mexican market, but they also serve key international markets with destinations to North and Central America. Currently, Interjet offers service to 47 destinations and in 2014 alone, transported 8.7 million passengers.

LCCs, a model that has been well adopted by major Mexican carriers, flew just over 22 million passengers last year. Thanks to the unbeatable efficiency and superior performance and economics it brings to airlines, the A320 Family has been the aircraft of choice by LCCs worldwide, especially those in Mexico over recent years. It is no surprise then, that this has led to a strong demand for A320 Family aircraft with a total of 148 aircraft in backlog and 104 aircraft in operation for Mexico’s LCCs.

Airbus continuously invests in innovation, research and development to provide value to end customers; it’s great to see how Interjet has been able to pass this value down to their passengers in the last decade.

Happy 10 years, Interjet, here is to decades of continued success!
