Airbus Foundation partners with Mexican airlines Volaris, Interjet provide humanitarian aid

This year has unfortunately been a record-setting year for natural disasters in Latin America.

Following multiple hurricanes, mudslides, forest fires and earthquakes, the Airbus Foundation and numerous airlines in the region have stepped up to provide much-needed humanitarian support.

Most recently, as a result of the devastating earthquake in Mexico in September, the foundation partnered with Mexican airline Volaris to provide their two newly-delivered A320neos to transport more than three tons of relief supplies, including clothing, blankets, mattresses, cleaning products, medical supplies and tents from Toulouse to Mexico City. The goods, donated by Aviation Sans Frontières, were we received and distributed by Un Kilo de Ayuda, Aviation Sans Frontières’ local NGO partner based in Mexico.

The Foundation also joined Mexican airline Interjet, using its delivery of a new A321 on lease from Aviation Capital Group. Over six tons of humanitarian aid including tents, self-inflating mattresses, camping hammers, water-resistant tarps and camping lanterns arrived at the Toluca International Airport from the Airbus operations in Hamburg. The goods, provided by the G‎erman NGO Humedica, were distributed by Programa Prostigue, their partner in Mexico.

Previously, Avianca partnered with the Airbus Foundation to help victims of mudslides in Colombia.

In March, LATAM partnered with Azul and the Airbus Foundation in a first-of-its kind collaboration to help the victims of devastating Chilean forest fires’ by transporting relief supplies.

Goodwill flights keep not been the only way the Airbus Foundation has provided support to the regions' affected population. The Foundation also partnered with Mexican air ambulance service Angel Flight to provide helicopter emergency transport to the affected population. Two light helicopters of the Ecureuil family – an AS355 and an H130 – were made available to hospitals for the transfer of the critically injured, as well as transportation of food and medicine after the earthquake made road traffic impassable. Airbus earth observation satellite imageries were also made available to Airbus Foundation partners through a dedicated portal, which helped assess damage.
